The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. An adaptation of Lyman “Frank” Baum’s 1900 children’s fantasy novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Baum made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen; the 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book became a landmark of 20th-century cinema.

Production of the film began when Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) showed that films adapted from popular children’s stories and fairytale folklore could be successful. In January 1938, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer bought the rights to Baum’s hugely popular Oz novel from Samuel Goldwyn.
