Event Details

The largest amphibious seabourne operation in history. Along with the associated airborne operations, D-Day marked the beginning of the liberation of France and Western Europe and was two years in the planning.

It drew on the knowledge of meteorologists, scientists, inventors, the combined might of militaries of 13 nations and assistance of tens of thousands of members of the French Resistance. It involved vast deceptions and secret operations to ensure success.

It’s no surprise that D-Day has earned its place as one of the most significant battles in history.

The Normandy invasion, also called Operation Overlord or D-Day, the Allied invasion of western Europe, launched on June 6, 1944.

The Royal British Legion will undertake a programme of commemorative events to mark the 80th Anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy on 5 and 6 June 2024.

North Tawton will fly a commemorative flag at 9:15 am in the Memorial Park on Thursday 6 June 2024, followed by:

  • Last Post performed by members of Okehamption Town Band.
  • One Minute Silence in Remembrance.
  • Reveille performed by members of Okehampton Town Band.
