North Tawton Community Games and Culture Week

North Tawton Community Games and Culture Week during half-term in June.

It all began with a casual conversation almost two years ago. Nick Morgan, who now chairs the Town Council, was chatting with a couple of local residents and came up with the idea of marking the 2012 Olympics here in North Tawton. There was great enthusiasm at the time and, as London 2012 drew nearer, the idea was revived this spring and work began in earnest.

Meetings were planned, events proposed. The aim was to involve the whole Community – all ages, all sports groups, the churches, the Guides downwards, the Cubs upwards, drama groups, voluntary organisations, businesses and of course, the school and pre-school – and as many willing pairs of hands as possible!

The upshot; we have now developed, in draft, an ambitious programme of more than 20 events and activities to be held during half-term week in June 2012.

North Tawton Community Games and Culture Week 2012 will include the chance to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and to revive cultural events which were part of the original Olympic Games. Not to mention historic local crowd pullers like the intriguingly named “Nanny Knights Revel.”

There’s even talk of re-staging an open air wrestling bout near the church – a popular spectacle, apparently, in the 1820’s.

For more about that, watch the ROUNDABOUT magazine, and, of course, for further details on all the events planned for the Games and Culture Week. We hope there will be something for everyone to enjoy and to remember, so please mark these dates on your calendar: Friday 1st June to Saturday 9th June inclusive.
