Leanne Rice: London Marathon for WellChild

London Marathon 2011

My name is Leanne Rice; I live locally at North Tawton and am 21 years of age. I work full time as a Beauty Therapist.

I have been running since October 2008, when I decided to start a local beginners running course with my mum, to build up our fitness levels. After the buzz running gave me I then started training for 10ks in 2009, after completing four, I then progressed onto Half Marathons. So in 2010, I ran five including the Great West Run, Bristol Half and The Bideford Half. The thought then of a Marathon didn’t come into the equation, but…

After much consideration I decided to go for it! It took a lot of effort writing letters and contacting charities. I then sure enough gained a place through the charity WellChild. As well as training I have the added pressure of having to raise £2,000 for the charity, but I have every confidence in myself that I can and will raise it!

Running the marathon alone is going to be by far the biggest achievement in my life! But, being able to run for such a fantastic charity means a great deal to me. It will help me think of all those sick and poorly children who are unfortunate enough not to lead fit and healthy lives, like the majority of us take for granted. It will also give me encouragement to get across that finish line thinking of all those sick children who without help from charities like WellChild may not even be living today.

WellChild helps sick children and their families throughout the UK to manage the consequences of serious illness and complex health conditions through their programme of care, support and research.
